Alcohol Problems More Common in Combat-Exposed Soldiers

Among U.S. military service members, Reserve and National Guard personnel who were exposed to combat while deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan face higher risks of alcohol-related problems compared to their non-deployed counterparts, according to investigators at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego. They report that Reserve and National Guard members with combat experience were more likely to have new-onset heavy weekly drinking, binge drinking, and alcohol-related problems than non-deployed personnel. Younger subjects were also at greater risk of alcohol-related problems, the report indicates.
